In the past world of newspaper photojournalism, reporting and photographing the weather is a unique challenge. While capturing monsoon rain, dust storms, or lightning it can be relatively straightforward, but wind presents its own challenges. We were prohibited from photographing sailboarding at McCormick Ranch Lake—it had become the go-to spot for wind-related shots and was over-photographed, prompting editors to declare, “No more sailboarding!”
With fewer options available, the pressure to find compelling weather art became a source of anxiety. So, on this day I set out on a photo hunt to Eldorado Park, hoping to find something—anything—that could represent wind. To my absolute surprise, two boys on skateboards came sailing by, using a bedsheet as a sail. The serendipitous moment paid off, capturing a humorous and creative scene. The joy of photographic success filled my soul, and my anxiety waned away.
To much fun with this one. Thought it was a little odd carrying your own diapers.
